David's Top 5 Japanese Dramas for 2013

Time for my second "Top 5" blog!

Seemingly, 2013's top dramas in my opinions happened to be sequels to top hits from previous years. Three out of my top 5 happened to be sequels in fact! It was really difficult to rank them, however, so I decided that there will be just two places. Four of them will tie for 2nd place, while there will be one first place.

Now for the disclaimer. Once again, these are my opinions. I used to be a Japanese drama (or dorama) guru, but over this year, I've not had as much time as I would like to watch these wonderful series! Therefore, my choices will be from a small pool that I watched, but these five dramas are all MUST WATCH for young or old, newbie or veterans, boys or girls, etc.

As a note, all images were taken from wiki.d-addicts.com. It's also the place where I find my english subs, for there are hard to come by at times. I like to take the time to thank the subbers out there for their hard work! =D

And now, let's get started! In terms of the "starring" roles, I'll place the actors/actresses that I feel deserve to be in the spot due to the amount of "screen time" they get, or if it's obviously intended for them to be part of the MAIN cast. What I mean by MAIN cast, is those that I consider to play a really significant role to enhance the main character. I will post links to the wikia for those who want the complete list of actors/actresses.

WARNING: There will be spoilers in the following sections!! I'll try my best not to ruin too much of the plot.

#2: Doctor X-2
Starring: Yonekura Ryoko as Daimon Michiko
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Doctor_X_~_Gekai_Daimon_Michiko

I've just finished watching this series about a week ago. The first season was amazing: a lone wolf who goes through the "Ivory Towers" of the Japanese Medical system through the use of her prodigious medical skills. Essentially, she takes crap from no one, which includes higher up managers and directors. She lets her medical skills do the talking, in which she performs miraculous surgeries that no other doctors can perform. Due to these high risk surgeries, she's suspected of being Doctor X: a doctor that performs these unorthodox miracles.

The second season pretty much picks up from the end of the first season. Instead of working as a freelance surgeon in the third satellite hospital for Teito University, Daimon Sensei was sent to the main hospital! Once again, Yonekura picks up the role as the "surgery-crazed" surgeon who is addicted to performing surgery. (If she doesn't perform a surgery after a brief time period, she gets withdrawal symptoms!)

Throughout the entire series, Daimon Sensei continues to perform surgeries after surgeries, with of course the usual controversy as she goes against the high ups. As of course, she gets fired for finally defying her superiors to the point that they can't handle anymore. Unlike the first season, I felt that the second season touched on a much darker aspect of the political scenes behind the Japanese medical system. Now, I'm not claiming to be an expert on the system, so I cannot say how accurate the portrayal from the drama series is, but it does raise some issues like corruption.

Besides the darker side of politics, I felt that there were more character development in terms of the other surgeons beside Daimon Sensei. Take for example, Fujiki Naohito's role as Kondo Shinobu: a surgeon from a third-rate university trying to climb the Ivory Tower of a prestigious medical university. I had mixed feelings for his character throughout the series, for which I think the author/director intended to do so.

Overall, it's a great series, and one that you should watch if you're a big fan of medical dramas. Of course, it is not for the faint of heart for there are surgery scenes within in the show. My only complaint is that it doesn't feel like there was an ending. I hope that means we may see a Season 3? If shows like Kyumei Byoto can have 5 seasons, surely this one can to? =D

#2: Galileo 2

Starring: Fukuyama Masaharu as Yukawa Manabu and Yoshitaka Yuriko as Kishitani Misa
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Galileo

I remember how excited I was when I found out that they were going bring in a second season for Galileo. The first season, special episode and movie were absolutely ingenious. We have Fukuyama Masaharu playing the role of the eccentric genius "Galileo"/Professor Yukawa (or was it Assistant Professor... that I cannot remember). In the first season and movie, he teams up with Detective Utsumi Kaoru (Shibasaki Kou) to figure out weird/paranormal cases in perhaps one of the best team/pairings I've seen in detective dramas. When season 2 was announced and that Shibasaki was going to be replaced... I was initially heartbroken and worried who was going to replace her role. "How can they do this to the pair?!" I thought initially... But then I saw that Yoshitaka was going to replace Shibasaki, and all my anxiety went away.

And truth be told, Yoshitaka as Detective Kishitani, the young, inexperienced, but highly groomed detective, did an excellent job! Once again, we're facing a whole bunch of cases that seemed odd at first, but have a scientific explanation for how it occured (for most of them anyways... the Twin one was definitely a case that even stumped Yukawa).

Since I watched this drama a while back, I cannot remember the ending at all. It must go to show that it wasn't a memorable way to end the series. All in all though, Galileo 2 was a very solid sequel to a excellent first season, special and movie. I'm looking forward for another movie/special to come out! Which, come to think about it, has already happened or is planning to come out... I believe it'll involve both Utsumi and Kishitani...

#2: Legal High 2
Starring Saki Masato as Komikado Kensuke and Aragaki Yui as Mayuzumi Machiko
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Legal_High

Ahhh... the series that reflect most of the troll/parodying anime series known as Gintama. I haven't finished this series yet, but I was surprised to see the references they made to some other drama series (ie: Galileo!!). Besides all the trolling (the ending of the first season was HILARIOUS), it has the touching aspects that Gintama had to offer.

Once again, Saki takes on the role of Komikado: the lawyer who will take any means to win a court case. Of course, Komikado is a genius as well. He may have some cards up his sleeves, but he can talk the talk, and manipulative the oppositional legal side to win a case. What was different about the start of this series however, was Komikado losing his first case! Technically, it's not a lost, since there's the appeal to the Supreme Court, but it really brought him down.

I have to say that the first episode of this season wasn't to my expectations, but the following episodes quickly reminded me of what made the first season so amazing: witty and silly humor for a law based drama. Perhaps Komikado is not Kimura Takuya's Kuryu in HERO, for he's a person you do not want to emulate... but like Mayuzumi's father said: "Thank you for showing my daughter what not to be" (loose quotes, since I don't remember the quote exactly).

The dynamics are also a bit interesting, for there's a seemingly love triangle between Mayuzumi, Komikado and another prosecutor-turned-lawyer, Hanyu Haruki (Okada Masaki). It's a bit of a cringe to me because I really dislike love triangles. However, as the series is going so far, it's not playing a significant factor (yet).

And of course, Saki Masato's facial expressions is just priceless.

#2: Tonbi
Starring: Uchino Masaaki as Ichikawa Yasuo
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Tonbi_2013

The last drama in my 4-way tie for second: Tonbi. From what I recall, Tonbi stands for Kite in English. A kite (not the one that people fly) is a type of bird, similar to a hawk. Throughout the drama series, we see a hawk flying with a tonbi. The interpretation behind the two flying is to symbolize the relationship between the father (Uchino) and his son. (The drama goes deeper into the interpretation, so I won't ruin it if you do watch it. =) )

Essentially, the story of Tonbi is about a "dumb-witted" father raising his only son after his wife dies from an accident. The father, Ichikawa Yasuo, is considered dumb because he didn't do well in school, highly stubborn and can be easily fooled at times. Besides all his faults, Yasuo does have a kind heart. He takes care of his son with the help of his friends in the small town they live in.

I haven't been watching a lot of family dramas recently due to all the high action medical/detective stories that were out there for this year. Tonbi was quite the change of pace, for there was little action involved, save for the couple of cliff hangers near the end of the series. Instead, the drama opted to focus on the development of the son, Akira (played by numerous actors to portray the different ages) through Yasuo's interaction. And of course, there was lots of learning to for Yasuo as he struggles to accept the death of his beloved wife and raising of his only son.

To me, it was the simple-minded character of Yasuo, beautifully portrayed by award winning actor Uchino, that really hooked me to this drama. The viewers can obviously tell that he has much love for his son. Also, Yasuo's stubbornness can bring out laughs for you wonder how can somebody be so "old-fashioned". Yet Yasuo's character is one that I simply cannot dislike. There were hints from Uchino's Sakamoto Ryoma from Jin (another drama) being channeled into this role... but essentially what I'm saying is that one has empathy (not sympathy) with Yasuo's character. And that was perhaps the winning part of the series that was unlike most of the other dramas I watched in recent time.

Besides Yasuo's character, I was able to reflect much on the theme of a father and son's relationship. Granted, I'm fortunate to live with both parents, but there are scenes within the drama that I can relate to. Overall, Tonbi is a must watch. It was not the story that won it for me, rather the character of Ichikawa Yasuo. Even to this day, the ending still sticks out to me. It's perhaps one of the most heartwarming endings that I've seen in over the 100+ drama series I've watched to date.

#1: Hanzawa Naoki
Starring: Sakai Masato as Hanzawa Naoki
http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Hanzawa_Naoki

It's highly unusual for drama series' episode to reach 40% viewership in recent times. The last time a drama episode reached 40% was 2011's Kaseifu no Mita. (And before that, I don't recall when a drama had a rating that high). When I heard that Hanzawa Naoki's last episode reached 42.2%, I knew I had to watch this series.

And I was definitely not disappointed. Hanzawa Naoki is my favorite drama for 2013, and definitely in my all time top 5 drama list (which will of course keep updating as I watch more and more series). It had an amazing cast, amazing theme song, amazing arcs (two of them) and just so much more. There isn't anything for me to criticize about this drama series. I even loved the ending, which was so ambiguous to me. (I doubt there will be a second season, but perhaps a movie to give it a sense of finality?)

What makes this drama so special? Perhaps it's due to the main and titled character: Hanzawa Naoki. After doing some research, I stumbled across an article written by Professor Usami Takeshi of Chuo University. You can read his article by clicking here. He's a professor of Modern Literature with a specialization on Modern Japanese Literature. Professor Usami speculates that Hanzawa Naoki sends a message of resilience as Japan recovers from the financial crisis of 2008 and the recent earthquake in 2011.

To me, it makes perfect sense. Like what Professor Usami says, a person probably doesn't get screwed over that badly from their superiors, but many people go through life working with certain individuals that give them grief. (For the record, I am NOT experiencing any particular grief at the moment from work, but I have experienced it before.) This drama offers them an escape, giving them something to perhaps fantasy about, as Hanzawa goes against the hierarchy within his bank to squash the corruption that puts his own job at jeopardy.

Essentially, Hanzawa Naoki is a drama about an investment banker (I believe that's his role... nevertheless he's a banker) who gets pinned for losing 500 million yen to a "reliable" company. At no fault of his own, Hanzawa has to retrieve the money back or risk losing his job. And the only way to do that, is for him to comply to such an outrageous task, but through his own means.

And that, was just the first arc. The second arc is similar, but on such a larger scale.

Overall, Hanzawa Naoki is a drama that has an intellectual, thrilling plot that keeps you riveted to the spot. The cast does a great job to move the storyline along, but I would say that Sakai's portrayal of Hanzawa takes the cake. (For those who are still awake from reading my blog may notice that Sakai Masato also plays the troll lawyer Komikado! Quite the shift of character!) He goes through such trials, even betrayals from his own close friend... but that doesn't stop him at all. (And the part where the two meet was greatly scripted!) I simply can't justify the series through my words. I know that I stated that you MUST watch all these dramas on my top 5 list, but if you only have time for one... this is the one. It's not only for those who enjoy thrillers, or salaryman type dramas... but it is for all to watch.

I don't think I'll ever see such another compelling drama for a long time to come.

***
And that marks the end of my review post! It took a lot longer than I thought it would take (I was working on this till almost 1 AM yesterday, thus I took a break and worked on it today for a good hour or more), but there you have it! I'm not sure what 2014 is offering in terms of dramas, but I will set aside time to watch for sure!

For everyone, I wish you well for 2014!

David's Top 5 Kpop Songs for 2013

2013 has seen a large shift in terms of my musical tastes. Besides BoA, Se7en, Rain/Bi and FTTS, I never really listened to Korean music. I was mostly Japanese, with the likes of BoA, Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro, Moumoon (a big find in the latter parts of 2012), Yuna Ito, etc.

I was always for the solo singers, for I always felt that groups weren't as talented. Ever since playing Ahri on League of Legends and realizing that her dance was based on SNSD's Run Devil Run... I became hooked onto Kpop music.

Of course, I can go on and on, but I won't bored you with my foray into Korean music. Let's start get started with my top 5 Korean songs for 2013! Once again, this is my opinion. Yes, there are probably many other songs out there that are better than the songs I listed, but I didn't put them down on my list because

1) I never heard of them (I'm still a Kpop newbie)
2) I'm not interested in the group/artist (To this day, I still prefer a woman's voice to a man's in pop music)
3) Being biased to certain groups may have play a significant factor in my list. (=P)

Now I got that out of the way, let's really start now!

#5: SNSD/Girl's Generation - I Got a Boy
I admit... I'm a huge SNSD fan. I'm not quite a SONE (their fan group), but I really like Girl's Generation. I was immensely pleased when they won theVideo of the Year award at the YouTube awards (or whatever it's called). I can't say I heard a song as unique as this song. It has a variety of different tempos, and the music video was very colourful/eccentric. It took a while for me to get used to the song, and to this day I still don't have it on my iPhone, but I'm considering the possibility for it making a showing on my phone.

It's a good song, and despite SNSD being my favourite group, it's not my number one song for the year! As stated previously, it took a while for me to get used to the concept of the song.

#4: Sistar - Give it to Me
Personally, I always thought that Sistar should be renamed "Hyorin featuring Sistar" since the leader of the group just overpowers everyone with her vocals. However, with this song, I felt that each member had a bigger part to sing in the song. Sistar's Give it to Me starts off strong with a G minor chord to Soyu's interlude/beginning/whatever-its-called. The chorus is great and the choreography is even better. And Dasom even has a pretty decent part in the song!

And I can see why Bora is considered to be the visual of the group. I have to say that she looked stunning in the video.

To my ears, it's better than I Got a Boy. I was initially hooked to the song, but I have to admit that I don't listen to it as much as I used to.

#3: Ladies Code - Bad Girl
This group is a relatively new find for me. I only became aware of their awareness a week ago when I heard this song being played on my brother's computer. From what I know, Ladies Code debuted in March of this year. Ladies Code's Bad Girl is, I would classify, a upbeat Jazzy-like tune. A very catchy beat ensures after a strong piano open.

At first, it sounded like a good, but typical song. When the main vocalist, Sojung, started singing... she just blew my mind. Her voice is one of a kind! The rest of the members sounded strong themselves, but Sojung is one of a kind. You'll have to give this a song a try if you haven't done so already! Sojung is the one with the blonde hair by the way.

#2: Kara - Damaged Lady
I posted a detailed review of the song and MV on September 6th for those who are interested in reading something more in-depth! As of today, this still happens to be my favorite Kara song. True, it's a song about being bitter after a break up, but the melody and music video were simply amazing. The drastic difference between their Queen costumes and White-shirt-and-tie created a nice visual contrast.

Go girls go! It's going to be sad to see the group of 5 be reduced to potentially a group of 3 (I'm not sure what Jiyoung is planning to do since I'm not really up to date with the news). Best of luck to Nicole on whatever she's planning to do!

#1: Song Ji Eun - False Hope
Song Ji Eun, the main vocalist of Secret, has done an incredible job with her 3rd single: False Hope. (To be honest, I'm still not quite sure what it's called, so let's just keep it to False Hope). I also wrote a detailed review of the song and music video on September 30th.

The music and the video topped my list for best Kpop song for the year. It's really a shame that Song Ji Eun is underrated. Her voice is simply amazing. She may not be as powerful as Ailee or Hyorin, but her voice reminds me of crystal. I never heard such a clear tone before.

Besides her tone, the MV, I found, happened to be very symbolic and well made. One of the best pieces for sure in 2013. If you haven't had the chance to listen to it, you should really take some time to do so! I think this is the most played song on my Korean list in iTunes.

Honourable Mentions for 2013
IU - Red Shoes (Quite the change from her cutesy work!)

Secret - I do I do (Interesting one-shot music video. Definitely better than their Yoo Hoo single they released in the Spring)

Kara - Runaway (A balladish song with a nice flowing melody)

Wow look at the time!

It's nearly 12 AM! Thus, I'll post my top 5 blog (blogsssss technically since I didn't do one today) for tomorrow. I guess it'll be on dramas and music (aka Kpop since I mostly listened to Kpop in 2013).

Other than that, the year is coming to a close!

One week done

And so ends the first week of break! It was quite a good week for I was able to meet up with friends and family. I'm also on track in terms of my "work schedule" that I've set aside for myself! This next week though will be quite busy... but hopefully I'll have enough time to get what I want to get done! The more work I put in now, the easier the start of the new year should be for me! =)

Starting from tomorrow, I'll list out my top 10 list for the year! Of course, it'll mostly be entertainment related! =P Or if I'm really feeling up to it... maybe multiple lists? I highly doubt it though...

Too many passwords >_>

First world problem.

I have too many different passwords to remember. And too many different email accounts as well to remember which email account I used to sign up for a site/forum, and which password I used for that particular site.

One day, I need to find a way to organize it so I don't get as confused.

One day...

But other than that issue, I can't believe it's Friday already! Once again, my plan to wake up early has been foiled but my lack of motivation to get work done! I tried moving my alarm clock away from me in hope that walking around my room to turn it off will wake me up enough.

Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. I ended up turning off my phone and falling asleep again...

Perhaps I need to place my phone further away... Maybe I'll be able to wake up this way!

Boxing Day 2013

Like the past couple of years, I spent my Boxing Day by...

Sleeping in.

I think I got up at around 11 PM today... despite setting my alarm for 7.

Either way, I managed to do a good deal of work. And when I thought I was caught up on schedule... I realized there was a bunch of sheets to be marked still. Ah well, I guess I can do them tomorrow (or in a couple of hours since it's already Friday!).

Break is going by toooooo quickly. >_>

Merry Christmas 2013!

My apologies for the lack of posting over the past couple of days! I've been playing LoL till midnight essentially, thus leaving me tired. Of course I could blog earlier... but I've gotta make excuses to justify my laziness.

The past couple days of my Winter Break has been pretty busy. I've either been going out to celebrate the winter holiday with friends, or doing some work at home (which I haven't been able to do as much as I hoped...) or relaxing with gaming or dramas. There was only one day (Sunday) which I felt like I didn't accomplish anything significant.

As for Christmas today, I had a family get together at a cousin's house. It was great to see relatives that I haven't seen in a while. There was a lot of food and drink, which definitely helped with the festive cheer that I haven't really felt this year for some odd reason.

Besides that, I've finished a drama series that I started on Sunday: Doctor X Season 2! Once again, we have Daimon Michiko, the "lone wolf" doctor that defies the ivory towers of the Japanese medical system. I felt that this season touched more on the political side of medicine in Japan (not sure how accurate it is since I'm neither a doctor, nor living in Japan) when compared to the first season. There was also more character development I felt in terms of some of the supporting actors, such as a doctor from a third-rate university trying to climb the ropes to become head of a prestigious medical university.

The ending was good, though not as great as the first season in my opinion. I won't get into much detail, but it felt incomplete... like the series could keep on going. Nevertheless, it was a great sequel to a really strong first season! Now onto my next drama: Legal High 2! Gotta watch these shows before things get busy again in January!

And that's that for today! Merry Christmas to all! And for those that don't celebrate Christmas, Happy Holidays! I'll try to blog daily from now on. Gotta get back to a normal sleep cycle soon...

Sunday, 15 December 2013

Past couple of days have been a blur!

After Tuesday last week, everything was just a blur! I've been busy with things, thus my apologies for not blogging for a while. =(

I have to say that I'm glad that Winter Break is coming up! I'll have time to recuperate and prepare myself for the new year. I'll definitely have a blog post on the 31st to reflect upon this crazy, though life changing year that I've had!

Since my blogpost is so short, here's a picture for today. I took it a while back while League of Legends had their Mystery Gift option still available. Essentially, you pay 490 RP points for a random skin. You must have that champion in your roster, but it's a pretty sweet way to get expensive skins for a cheap price. Of course, the only downside is that it's random... so you may end up with skins that you absolutely do not want (I'm looking at you Sanguine and Dreadknight Garen... I don't even use you!). My luck hasn't been so bad, for I got some nice skins like Officer Caitlyn, Amethyst Ashe, Panda Annie, etc.

The best skin, or the one that costed the most, had to be this though!

It's a good thing I started playing Teemo top before getting this skin!

Tuesday, 10 December 2013

Compared to yesterday... It's Tuesday already?!? And crazy drivers!

Somehow, I couldn't believe that it was Tuesday today! Somehow, it felt like a Monday...

So my morning started off bright and early. The roads are slippery due to the recent snow storm/cold weather that we've been having in Calgary.

Since there was no falling snow, apparently people thought it was okay to drive at speed, or even FASTER than limit. I had about three close shaves today. First off, I was driving 10 under, but some guy thought it was okay to zoom past me and cut me off. It was interesting to see him swerve as he had to stop for a red light.

Next off, I was driving down a road and some SUV off a side road zips through to make the right turn onto the main road that I was on. Sure, it would be alright, but due to his fast speed, his car automatically slides to my lane. If I haven't had my foot on the brake pedal (I assumed that something crazily stupid would happen), I would have rear ended him. Thank goodness though that my tires had enough grip and that traction control and ABS kept me in a straight line. Besides a potential rear end accident, I would have swerved onto oncoming traffic.

My last encounter was when I was coming home. I was behind some traffic at a red light. There were no cars behind me. All of a sudden, I see a SUV fast approaching me, with apparently no intention of stopping...

With my heart racing, and no apparent signs of the guy slowing down (he slammed on his brake I think since he started to swerve), I moved my car to the right. It turned out that he was going to the far left lane so he can make a left turn. Either way, it scared the living daylights out of me.

Once again, enough ranting for one day. But seriously... I think some common sense is needed for some drivers. Just because there's no new snow falling doesn't mean the roads are justified for you to drive like how you would drive during the summer.

It's only Monday?

Man I'm exhausted.

I really thought today was at least Wednesday...

But in reality, it's only Monday.

I hope I can last for the rest of the week... It's been a busy day, but I guess that's what life is about.

Once again, thank goodness that the winter break is fast approaching!

Kata Tournament 2013!

Today once again marks the annual Kata tournament. The brown/black belt division seemed a little bit bare today, but it still stretched on for the entire hour and a halfish. The other two divisions had a whole bunch of students today.

Overall, it was a great experience once again! There were some new faces that went far in the tournament, which I hope was a morale boost to them! I believe we also had some new winners this year for each division. Congratulations to all!

And onto some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a loooooooong day. =/

Winter Chill is lifting!

It was a lot warmer in the evening today in comparison to how the week went by! After coming home from work, it was a lot warmer than I thought it would be. I didn't have to don on my gloves as I walked from the car to my back door.

T'was a typical Saturday. Volunteered, did some work, went to go teach piano, etc. Only thing that's really interesting at the moment are the upcoming albums from Secret and SNSD. I can't say I'm really feeling the holiday cheer at the moment, but I guess I will soon! I wonder if I should venture out to malls to see the chaos of Christmas shopping (I wonder how bad it is at this time of the month), or stay at home and just do more work... =P

So much snow...

It finally stopped snowing yesterday, but we had such a huge snow fall since Monday! Snow everywhere. There were many people stuck in front of my house yesterday. Some Good Samaritans in huge pick up trucks were towing cars out of the snow drifts since there was a tow ban in my city.

Besides the snow, everything is same old. Can't wait for Winter Break though! It's going to be a blast hopefully! ^_^

And then hopefully I can spice up my blogs. I've been saying it for a while, but I realize that my posts are quite uninteresting at the moment...

Monday, 2 December 2013

Going to bed before 10??

I think this is a first for me! Going to sleep before 10 PM.

I've been busy the past couple of days getting stuff ready for today! Loads of things accomplished, though a lot of room for growth.

In a sense, this blizzard was a blessing =P. But I can't say the same for the drive...

And now off to sleep! Tomorrow is going to be another chaotic day in terms of driving...

Busy Busy!!

Busy like a bumblebee!

My weekend was chockful of activities. First off on Friday, I was falling asleep (did I mention this already) during Bubbletea. It was only 10:30... On the other hand, the Ferrero Rocher drink I had was mightily delicious at Hot Point. It had a hint of Maraschino Cherry flavor in it that really enhanced the flavor!

On Saturday, I had piano teaching. Since I had some time in between lessons this week, I travelled to a mart I saw while I went for Korean food down in the SW. The mart in question was called E-mart. It essentially housed a ton of Korean and Japanese goods. I needed some Green Tea, so I purchased a bag. I have yet to try it to this day, but I will find some time on the weekend to give it a go!

Sunday was karate, and a bunch of other things that I needed to get done for today. Fortunately, I managed to finish a good chunk of stuff, so it was a very productive Sunday. I also purchased Civilization for the iPad. I had to use it for a project... and I think it might go as planned! I'm still learning the game (it has quite the learning curve), but I did spend a good hour and a half playing it on Sunday.

And today, was just busy! Busy busy busy. But that's life I guess! =) (Or should it be =/)

Thursday, 21 November 2013

Yoga!

It's been a busy past couple of days. My brother's and mother's birthday were one day apart, so there was a lot of cake to be had. I've also been busy planning stuff, and hopefully... it'll all go well very soon!

Today, I had my first Yoga session. It wasn't a full session since everyone was quite busy, but it was a great first session. Right after, I felt a lot more relaxed and refreshed than what I was going in. Though traffic didn't really help much afterwards...

But that's it for today! And my stomach is grumbling from all that cake... and other food.... =/

Weekend Blizzard

Calgary was hit by quite a blizzard yesterday. It was quite crazy out there. >_>

Good thing that today was a lot better! There was a lot more sun out and the air felt a lot warmer. Only issue is that it may freeze all that slush, thus making it an icy drive tomorrow. =/

But other than that, it has been a busy weekend! Got quite a bit of stuff done, and managed to keep myself sane with LoL and Phoenix Wright!

And now off to sleep!

So sad that they took Mystery Gift away from League of Legends. =(

So during the Hallowing (or whatever its called) event, they had an option where you can gift friends skins for 490 RP. It's a random skin given, based on their champion pool, but the skin was guaranteed to be above 520 RP if I'm not mistaken.

In other words, if you were lucky, you could have gotten great skins! I was fortunate enough to get Officer Caitlyn (originally 975) and a Battle Regalia Poppy (520). Pretty sweet deals in my opinion and the surprise factor is always nice!

I tried gifting my brother, but found out that the option was removed! I hope they'll bring it back for Christmas! Tis the season to give! =)

Ironic spiders...

I've been listening to the Harry Potter audio books for a while now as I drive around town. As I was driving down 16th Ave, merging onto the exit ramp to 36th street, I was on the part where Aragog died and Harry was at Hagrid's house awaiting the funeral (on the 6th book). It was explaining how Harry looked out and noticed the dead gigantic spider curled up outside.

At that point, I looked out of my side window and noticed a black truck streaking by. What was unique about this truck was a particular add-on/clip-on/thingymobarberish on the back of the cab window.

It was a SPIDER WEB!

Talk about Ironic!

And I can't believe I have misplaced my USB drive... I can't do much without it now...

Note to self... transfer the contents on it when I do find it...

Broke my credit card ban

Today marks the day where I broke my own credit card ban/fast, in which I haven't used my card for about 4 weeks. It was simply due to the fact that I wasn't depositing any money into my bank account, thus I don't really have money to pay off my bills! (I've been using cash recently since I have that on hand more readily).

I went to go purchase some supplies at Staples and at Memory Express (USB Drive, since my old one is starting to crack up). They were all out of the USB drives that were on-sale. =( I did end up purchasing one, but I may return it if I find a better deal.

Ah, tis the life of a money pincher. These past couple of months have taught me well!

Been one heck of a week!

Can't post much details yet... but once I can, I will! Please bear with the vagueness of my blog posts for just a little more!

Anyways, it was quite a eventful and busy week. I had a lot of tasks to handle, and I can't really say that I'm on top of things as of yet. Hopefully by the end of this week, I'll be on more levelled ground!

So far, so good though! I'm surviving, so I guess that's what's important now! Well I think...

Anyways, today marks Remembrance Day. Lest we forget the sacrifices that thousands of Canadians made to keep our country as what it is today.

And to cap it off... I decided to go back to blogging daily. I realized, over the past week, that it's one of the things that will help keep my sanity as I make adjustments to my current life! =)

Long Day in November! Hiatus till the weekend!

It's been quite another long day today. I was out and about for pretty much the entire day! Getting stuff done here, getting stuff done there. All in all, a busy, but productive day.

And since I don't have anything of interest to say at the moment, or for a while due to some circumstances at the moment... I'll be on hiatus till the weekend! Hopefully, I'll have some time to post up something interesting by then!

As I was scrolling on YouTube

Great videos from VitalyzdTV! The Extreme Homeless Man Makeover is quite a great video.

Part 1

Part 2

Martin, if I remember the homeless man's name correctly, suffered some hardship after the first video, but he managed to persevere.

Winter Driving is Back!

It was quite a drive this morning to karate. The road near my house was icy, so I had some slippery moments. Fortunately, the main roads were good! The snow cleanup have improved quite well over the past couple of years, that's for sure!

As for class today, it was the same old. It was a busy class to teach today, but fortunately there were a lot of helpers today. After class, I went home and was isolated in my room for a couple hours, so I spent the time breeding Pokémon. I'm still in the process of getting a decent Ralts, but I guess it'll come in good time.

After Pokémon, I took a refreshing light nap. Then, I did a couple hours of chores. And now, it's time for sleep! Tomorrow is going to be a long, but exciting day!

Pokémon Breeding isn't too bad with YouTube

So much snow! Good thing I didn't have to go out besides Volunteering this morning. Once again, a normal day at the hospital. I played through my songs and went home.

When I got home today, I did some studying and played a couple of games of LoL. Starting next week, I will have to cut back to playing on the weekends, but it's alright! =) Besides LoL, I started breeding for my Pokémon team. It's not as easy as using Pokésav, that's for sure...

My initial goal was trying to get Pokémon with 6 maxed (valued at 31) IVs (essentially, super-soldier like Pokémon). Which turned out to be a lot harder than it looked. I had my ditto with 3 31 IVs and my Pokémon in need, with 2 31 IVs in different stats, but to no avail. Most of the offspring either had the 3 from the ditto (since it was holding a Destiny Knot) at best... or 1 to 2 31 IVs. After about an hour of hatching and checking their stats, I decided to settle for 3 IVs that were beneficial for that individual Pokémon. For example, a Gible with 31 IVs in Attack, Special Defence (hope that helps against Ice type moves... besides Ice Fang) and Speed.

To help with this necessary, but tedious grind, I employed the help of YouTube. Pretty much, I spent my evening watching a bunch of random YouTube videos. All of a sudden, I felt like listening to the OST of one of my favorite dramas: Bara no nai Hanaya (The Flowershop without a Rose). I watched this drama years back, when I was a semi-veteran and immensely irritated with the genre of Romance. I have seen tons of romanatic dramas that seemed to use the same love triangle plot, which really got onto my nerves. I was initially hesitant to start this drama, but it starred Takeuchi Yuko and Shaku Yumiko. Thus, I began watching this drama was a sense of apprehension. It turned to be nothing but nought since Bara no nai Hanaya was nothing like what I have expected. Sure, it didn't have the best plot, and some parts were highly unrealistic... yet it was simply well acted in my opinion.

But enough talk! Time to catch up on sleep! Remember that it's Daylight Saving Time, so roll back your clocks!

This scene was one of my favorites throughout the drama.

Already November??

Time surely flies! It's already November!

Despite it being Friday, I did get some work done! Went over a couple of things, and finally figured out a team I want for Pokemon Y.

For dinner tonight, we went to Sura to eat. It's been a while, but it was a pleasant eat nevertheless.

And due to tiredness and needing to be able to get up early next week... it's time for sleep!

Hallowe'en 2013

Woke up relatively early since my sinuses were killing me once again (I hope I'm not catching another cold again!). However, after clearing up my nose, I went back to sleep, listening to the audiobook that I've had going for the past week now. (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

After getting up, I ate some breakfast... and then played some LoL. Once that was over, I went out for lunch and shopped for a bit. And then came home before it got to dark, for today is Hallowe'en! And I haven't gave out candy in a loooooooong time now. My street is relatively quiet and the prices of candy has gone up from what I remember they used to be... 10 years ago. Of course it's inflation, but still... my excuse is that candy is bad for children! I know from experience that it's unhealthy, and being a teacher, gives teachers headaches the day after Hallowe'en. Either from extreme tiredness/moodiness from eating candy late at night, to extreme hyperness from a sugary breakfast.

So what did I do for Hallowe'en this year? Well played 6 games of LoL in a row! I can't believe it took almost 5 hours for all 6 games to complete (including breaks and such), but at least my evening is now over.

And back to job searching and other important tasks tomorrow!

Ha, yeah right... it's Friday tomorrow! ;)

Warming up Wednesday

Nothing out of the ordinary to report. Woke up late... got up ate breakfast and realized it was almost time for lunch...

Those are the days where I get absolutely nothing done T.T

On the plus side... at least it was decently warm today. A lot of the snow was melting on the ground, so that's always a good sign!

And now off to sleep, so I can hopefully wake up early tomorrow to get work done!

Waking up at 6 for the first time since... April...

I believe today was the first day I had waken up at an hour that I'm normally not accustomed to due to an interview at a charter school! Not complaining because of the early start time, but rather it is something that I'm not accustomed to seeing that I've been waking up at around 9 AM daily...

Anyways, I got up, ate breakfast quickly and proceeded to shower and get dressed. I left my house at around 7:50 and ended up around 40 minutes early for my interview. Therefore, I waited in my car and observed the students being bussed in from communities. I guess you could say that it looked slightly creepy, for I was just sitting in my car looking at school busses... but I had nothing else to do at the moment! I didn't want to do more research since it would have made me more nervous!

When it was about 15 minutes to my interview, I proceeded into the school and to the main office. I was greeted warmly by the secretary at the school. It was the first time that a secretary has engaged me in small talk for an interview, but due to my nerves, I could only comment about the crappy weather we've been having... =/

Then, very shortly, the interview started! There were three people interviewing me, which, oddly enough, didn't increase my anxiety. Somehow I managed to keep calm and answered the questions to the best of my ability. True, I was given about 20 hours to prepare for the interview, but fortunately for me I had some experience with previous interviews. After around 25 minutes or so, my interview ended and we parted. Looking back, I believe I did myself justice. Of course, I hope for the very best outcome for myself, but then again, there are still many teachers out there looking for jobs. Only thing I can do really is to continue forward, and if things really don't look up... well I guess I have my back up plan lined up. =/

And that's that! Off to sleep! Long day indeed!

Monday, 28 October 2013

What an interesting day!

I got up relatively early and submitted my applications for the day. Afterwards, I got ready to leave my house to attend to some chores that I have been neglecting for a while. I got all dressed up, put on my coat and walked out the door. About 10 steps on the sidewalk, I received a phone call, which promptly sent me back home to "change directions" for the moment! =)

And pretty much, I spent the day prepping up for tomorrow! More of it tomorrow! =)

Snow snow snow!

So much snow today! The drive to karate was slushy, but otherwise uneventful. Apparently though, there were 300+ accidents this morning! I guess some areas were hit harder/icier than my area.

Due to the snow, I thought that class would be pretty empty. For the brown/black belt class, it was... though I can't really say the same for the white/green belt class. There were a bunch of students missing, yet 20 of them managed to make it to class. Fortunately, there were enough senior instructors today, thus class went relatively smoothly.

Afterwards, the rest of my afternoon consisted of preparing cover letters for a couple of job applications that I'll submit tomorrow morning. Apparently, from what I read in an article, job seekers have a better chance of getting an interview when they apply on Monday! Hopefully that's true!

Besides applications, I played a bunch of LoL. My brother and I finally finished our placements. We finished with a 6-4 record, which placed us in Silver 3. It's better than what I expected, but I was a bit disappointed since there were three games that we shouldn't have loss.

And that's that! Onto sleep and a new week!

Chores Chores Chores

T'was a chore day today! After volunteering, I got home and helped out a bit with the repainting of our garage door's... boarders or whatever you call the thing that surrounds it...

After a quick lunch, it was off to changing the tires on our vehicles for the expected snowfall tomorrow. 5-10 cm from what I heard on the radio...

Somehow, changing the tires took a lot longer than I thought it would, but at least we're a bit safer now for the snowfall!

Only in Calgary where you go from a gorgeous day (+17 degrees Celsius) to a snowfall warning.

And that marks pretty much my day today!

Oh and started playing ranked in LoL. I swear, it seems like ranked games have better mannered people than normals.

Just realized it's been 2 years...

I just realized that it has been 2 years and 18 days since I first started the blog! I didn't have anything in mind to "celebrate" my second anniversary.

All in all, it has been an eventful blogging year. Once again, I got lazy during the summer months and posted about once a week. The "Hot Fall Spamming Blog Post" trend also continued during which I managed to post daily (expect for that one time in October I believe). Unfortunately, compared to last year, the past 6 months have been one of the most uneventful/boring/"depressing" (I wasn't depressed) months due to circumstances beyond my control. Oh well, what can you really do, but to move on with life?

And now, onto a hopefully more exciting blogging year!

Hopefully...

I actually got up early, but...

So I woke up 10 minutes before my alarm went off.

And for the first time... I actually felt quite awake! It was about 7:05 AM, so I looked outside my window...

And saw how everything was dark.

So I went back to sleep...

And woke up at my "usual" time of 9:30ish.

>_<

Besides my failed attempts to waking up early, I've made great progress in Pokemon! I found Friend Safari's with Dragonairs and Eevees. Now just a ditto farm and I'll be set! =)

Tuesday, 22 October 2013

Slightly famous?

So after work today, I got home and played some League of Legends. My brother and I are back on a winning streak, so things were looking good for us. We ended up playing a game with a friend and two random people.

It turned out that one of the random people were streaming the game online! I believe this was a first for me. Sure, we were all probably low ELO/Bronze League, but it felt kinda cool to be on "live internet TV".

And we won the game, despite an initial setback, and what I think was a bad team composition (we had no tanks).

But I guess a win is a win! =)

Exhausted so I'll keep it short

Woke up, job searched, applied to some jobs, waited for some guys to fix our electrical cables, went for my flu shot, shopped a bit, went to go vote.

The End for today

Cracked a nail. ='(

Chipped my right toe's toenail during karate today. Somehow, I was sweeping my left foot over my right foot and my heel caught my toenail. (It's a bit long since I haven't trimmed it in a while). I heard small crack, and pain shot up my leg. I looked down and noticed that I cracked my toenail. Fortunately though, the crack is relatively small and that my toe nail didn't fall off.

Besides that, I went on a friend spree on Pokemon. I found a page on facebook where they have people exchange friend codes to get more friend safaris to visit! I managed to get about 12 names in about 10 minutes worth of time! Definitely worth it!

If you have either Pokemon X or Y, hit me up! =)

From one medical drama to another!

I won't be starting my next medical series yet, but I'm stoked to find out that there's a sequel to Doctor X!

Despite the "suggestive" poster, the drama is pretty much about highly skilled doctors known as Doctor Xs since they perform miraculous feats that other doctors are unable to do. I watched the first season not too long ago, and I was quite pleased with what they had to offer. I'm thinking that the second season will just be as good!

I don't know if I mention it yet, but I recently finished DOCTORS 2. Once again, great season! (Which reminds me that I should get working on that review of Hanzawa Naoki soon...)

Experience Share is surely a double edged sword

Ever since the first generation, I always had to have a Dragonite on my team. After fishing for nearly 20 minutes on Route 21 of Pokemon Y, I finally caught myself a Level 40 Dratini. Fortunately for me, it was a female, thus making it easier for me to breed a baby Dratini. I didn't want to train the level 40 one since it could have evolved to a Dragonair 10 levels ago, thus losing out on some potential points of growth.

Not that my baby Dratini is doing any much better at the moment...

I've been battling with Pokemon at around level 50, with my other Pokemon of course. Dratini has been just sitting in the back, gaining experience via the newly improved Experience Share key item and Lucky Egg (even more boost to experience).

Now don't get me wrong! I love the new Experience Share. It's great for getting through the game. If I'm not mistaken, each of your Pokemon that wasn't in battle receives 50% of what the battling Pokemon gets! In other words, it makes going through the story line that much easier, since you don't have to train as much. On the other hand though, it means Pokemon that aren't developed to their full potential (ie: EV training). I think what Nintendo is getting at, is that they know/believe that most people that play Pokemon whiz through the story and THEN get down to building their ideal team.

In other words, come up with a well balanced team, beat the Elite 4, and disband and start all over. But this time, breed for the perfect ability/IVs/whatever else they implemented and EV train like crazy. (Well that's my plan anyway).

I have to admit that it's going to be tough to EV train once again. For Pokemon Black and Black 2, I used Pokesav and made myself the perfect team (perfect IVs and maxed out EVs for EVERYTHING). Therefore, I was able to keep the same team throughout my entire gameplay.

Playing it legit this time, I will  have to, eventually, go through the vigorous EV training and perhaps even breed for good IVs as well. (I recall spending almost 60 hours to getting a decent Dragonite in Pokemon Pearl). It's going to be tough work, but it'll probably be more fun this way. As of course, since I don't really have all the time in the world when compared to my high school/university days, I won't be spending hours training! =P

Well I didn't expect to be that out of shape...

It was really windy today, but I thought that it was a good day to start jogging again.

So I put on my long sleeve shirt, slapped on a pair of pants (shorts were too cold), and got on my runners.

I went outside, to the pathway in front of my house, and started jogging. I ran down the hill, and started back up. About halfway up, I noticed how hard the wind was blowing, and I was facing a headwind.

That wind took a larger toll on me than I expected. I was absolutely exhausted after, essentially, 4 minutes of jogging (I'm basing this on completing a song on my iPod). Walking was no good with what I had on, due to the chilly air, so I trudged on home.

Since my "workout" was cut short, I decided to do some push ups.

No good...

I only got in about 10 in total...

How about squats?

No good either...

Probably got in 10 in as well...

I know I'm out of shape... but this is ridiculous! But complaining won't do any good, so back to building up that stamina!

Well one more complaint... my Tamagotchi changed into it's adult form. Unfortunately, I got a Red Masktchi, which meant I apparently severely neglected it during some parts of its life. True I didn't take good care of it when it was a baby, due to my mistake of hatching him during a time where I was busy... yet I thought I made up for it in later stages of it's life. =(

And now it has an wide open mouth when it poops on the floor. =(

To be honest, I preferred the "sarcastic" smile of the teen Tamagotchi that I had.

Talk about lucky!

After job searching in the morning, I went out for lunch with my brother today. I was craving pho because the last time I had it was in June.

So off to my usual haunt, or what used to by my favorite place when I frequently ate pho back in the day. After lunch, we went to Best Buy since we needed some styluses for our 3DSs. We were reluctant to use the ones that came with the 3DS because the nib that holds it in place tends to wear down after a while. I realized that issue with my old white DS Lite.

Since we were in Best Buy, we spent time looking at other stuff. After about 30 minutes, we proceeded back to the car. It was then that I realized that I left my wallet in the car; right in my drink tray.

In other words, it was in plain sight!

I was fortunate that nobody broke into our car, especially since we live in the NE (notoriously known as a poorer section of Calgary). Normally, I would keep my wallet in my pockets, but I'm not sure why I left it in the car today...

So thank goodness for that! =) And from now on, well until I forget, I will always double check my pockets whenever I take the car out!

I'm not sure why my Tamagotchi is so proud of itself...

Last Friday, after discussing about tamagotchi for some reason, I decided to download the app for my iphone. I recall from my childhood how addicting these things were (not as fun now due to the improved technology now a days).

I believe I've been taking good care of my pet. It has maxed out discipline, hunger (as in full), and happiness.

What I don't get is how it is so pleased when it poops on the ground. I have the first generation tamagotchi, so I think I can't potty train it... But really?

I dunno if it irks me because it pooped on the ground with a grin, or if I'm laughing along with it...

Thanksgiving 2013

What am I thankful for this year?

There are many things that I'm thankful for, that hasn't changed for a while. What's new that I'm thankful for... is a question that I'm currently searching!

But enough philosophical thoughts. My Thanksgiving was like any other day I've had over the past couple of months. It was an ordinary day. But perhaps, looking back to the past couple of months, ordinary isn't too bad after all.

Sunday, 13 October 2013

Oh ho! Things just got more interesting in DOCTORS!

Once again, a pretty standard Sunday. Started my day with Karate and came home to help out with more chores. Between chores, I had some time to play more Pokemon Y. I have yet to reach the second gym yet, but I found a place to grind for money! The Battle Chateau really helped me with my financial issues.

Other than that, I got in my daily episode of DOCTORS 2, which is a sequel to a drama I'm watched a year back (or two). It's essentially about a doctor who wants to change a hospital for the better through means that may seem "villainous" to some. Essentially, he schemes up little plans to help the hospital become better. However, at the end of today's episode, he announces a huge scheme of his, which caught me by surprise.

I have to see how it turns out during tomorrow's episode!

Pokemon X and Y

I think this is the first time that Nintendo made a world wide release for one of their super popular series. Early this morning, while I was at volunteering at PLC, my brother went to pick up our copies.

He settled for X while I had Y in my possession. Despite doing some chores (changing the car's oil for example), I got some time to give Pokemon Y a try. And I have to say, that I was really satisfied with the game so far. It really feels like a trip down memory lane, but with much improved graphics. You even get a Kanto (Generation 1) starter! And I got a Pidgey (Generation 1 bird) and Pikachu!!

What also made it really nostalgic was the forest (forgot the name) you enter to get to your first gym badge. Viridian Forest anyone?

As of now, I've beaten the first gym leader. I'm currently heading towards the second gym. All in all, I have 5 Pokemon in tow: Froakie (the water type), Pidgey, Butterfree, Torchic (wi-fi event) and Pikachu. I'm on my way to get my Kanto starter: which I've decided to settle on Bulbasaur so that I have the three starter types on my team!

Ahh but enough Pokemon geekiness for one day!

My copy of Pokemon Y

Sirens

Tons and tons of sirens today when we were headed out for Bro Night. In the first 15 minutes or so, we probably saw around 4 fire trucks. They weren't one after another either, just four different fire trucks with their sirens on heading to differen locations.

After dessert, there were a couple more sirens on our way home!

Not the 13th of Friday today. Perhaps it's the Friday the 11th curse now! =0

Path of Least Resistance

I started reading a self-help book called Path of Least Resistance, written by Robert Fritz. It's an interesting read so far; I'm on the part about how our life is underlay by structures that determines our pathways. From what I'm understanding so far, if you want to change your future, you got to change these underlying structures. One simply can't change their behaviour (such as working out more, studying more, eating less, etc), since these structures determine behaviour.

Or something like that. I've got a bit to read still. Besides reading though, I wasn't as productive as I wanted to be... Woke up a lot later than I normally would too...

And at this rate... I'll probably wake up late as well tomorrow.

>_>

By golly....

After my post from yesterday, I ended up doing nothing today...

Well not really. I applied to a charter school here in Calgary! They just opened up a Science Teaching position not too long ago. Fingers crossed!

Besides job searching, I finished Hanzawa Naoki. I didn't really enjoy the ending so much, but nevertheless, it was an outstanding series. Perhaps a review sometime this week on it!

And I picked up my Japanese studies again. It's been a while so I forgotten some of my hiragana...

T_T

But hopefully tomorrow will be more productive!

Crossroad

Instead of blogging about my day today, perhaps it's best to express how I feel at the moment:

I feel like I'm at a crossroad, with a bag of my personal belongings. There are many paths, with each path leading me through troubles and pleasure. Which path to take? Now that's the question! As confused as I may be... I hesitantly hold my head up high. At times I want the wind to tell me where to go, but in the end... I'm the master of my own destiny.

Though for now... I'll like to sit down in the middle and ponder which path shall I trend, for I don't know what destination I would like to arrive on!

Ghost Pepper Burrito

Not for me this year! My brother never got the chance to try it, so we went to the Mucho Burrito in Country Hills. The sauce bottle looked different than what I remembered from last year (I had a clear glass bottle while he had those reusable plastic ones you see at Subway). Either way, it was still "Hotter Than Hell" when he had it.

Besides that, I got some studying done today, job searched and applied to a job, did some chores and watched the season premier for Hajime no Ippo. Season 3 is upon us! =) Oh and I finished watching Pokémon Origins. It's a 4 episode series based on the original Pokémon games. It was an interesting plot, though some parts didn't make much sense to me.

Anywhoos, time to sleep! I need to start waking up early again. I got up at 8ish today...

Hanzawa Naoki

Karate went well today, though I felt extremely slug-like during class today...

Besides that, my day was pretty normal. I spent my afternoon finishing the first arc of a Japanese dorama that I'm currently watching: Hanzawa Naoki. It's about a banker who was set up to take the blame for a 500 million yen deal that went wrong. Therefore, he had to work hard to save his neck.

So far, based on the first arc, I can see why it had such high viewership ratings in Japan. It's a riveting story, following Hanzawa as he tracks down the culprit who wouldn't return the money. What makes this drama different than other dramas of a similar nature is that it feels really realistic in terms of the emotions portrayed by the various characters in the show. At times, I even felt sympathy for the ones who are doing Hanzawa wrong.

I just started the second arc today, but I'll try to keep it down to an episode a day. It's going to be tough, since the story line is quite a thriller, but I'll stick to my word!!! Somehow...

Besides that, I finished up an anime series I was watching: Sunday without God. It had a great premise: the world was abandoned by God, therefore there are no new births, but no deaths at the same time. When people "die", they come back as the undead. Pretty much they're zombies, but function like if they were living. The only way these undead could find peace is if Grave keepers (special humans that God gave to people before He ditched them) properly bury them.

It had the potential of being a great series based on the storyline. I really enjoyed the first 6 episodes. It was a bit slow, but it earnestly portrayed the main character as an innocent 12 year old, trying to save the world as a half grave keeper/human. However... the last 6 episodes could have been done without. I felt like that the last 6 episodes were simply fillers, for I couldn't see what purpose it served to the original intentions of the main character. In the end, I have to say that I was disappointed with the series. It had great potential, but I believe it didn't deliver.

And onto a picture I snapped for today! I was moving some lumber, and I found an interesting beetle! It's something I never seen before. To be honest, I'm not sure if it is a beetle...

Loooooooong Day

Today was quite a long day for me! I was feeling slightly under the weather, so I didn't go to volunteer at the hospital today.

Instead, I spent the entire day doing various tasks/chores/cleaning. It was pretty much 11 hours of work, with some small breaks. I have to say it's been a while since I had to do so much labour. And it was definitely tiring! I keep saying that I'll boost my endurance somehow, but I never keep to my words. I guess my daily walks aren't enough exercise and I need to start jogging once again!

And what to blog as well! My daily life has been quite boring for the past couple of months...

Perhaps I'll start writing stories once again! =)

Salads

I find that after a rough day of "bowel" movements, a nice salad is useful in helping my digestive system get back on track.

And I just had that today for dinner! But then I ate some cheesecake and got all gassy once again.

I guess another day to recover! And since I'm tired, I'll leave it at that!

Song Ji Eun - Hope Torture Mini Album Review

Note: I got the album title off Wikipedia. To be honest, I have no idea what the proper title of the album is called. I've checked YESASIA, and they just stated the album as "Song Ji Eun Single Album Vol.1"

Essentially two and a half years after Secret's Song Ji Eun released her single, "Going Crazy", she is back with her first mini album! This album consists of three songs that I would classify as R&B.

1) Vintage (feat. Zelo of B.A.P.)
A mid tempo-upbeat piece that starts off with off beat (syncopations) and what starts like a DJ swerving a turn table. It's a pleasing song that doesn't sound like it's pushing Ji Eun's vocal capabilities. Zelo, a fellow idol from hip hop boy band B.A.P. raps in certain sections, but I can't say that his rapping suits my taste. Overall, it's a nice song to listen too, but I don't find it to be memorable.
SCORE: 6/10

2) Hope Torture
The title track for Ji Eun's album. This song is simply musical bliss for my ears. (When I first heard the intro of the piece, it kind of reminded me of Secret's Daddy Long Legs, for it had a similar opening with the guitar). This slow-mid tempo R&B piece has a wonderful instrumental track. The classical guitar can be heard throughout the piece, which I think gives this song a very soulful touch to it. I have to say that her vocals are flawless in this piece, and the same goes with her English. The final chorus contains a lot of her ad-libbing that demonstrates why I consider her as the Mozart of the Kpop world. I akin her voice to a crystal ball, pure sounding and clear.

Perhaps, one of her best works to date!
SCORE: 10/10

3) Date Mate
Upbeat piece with an electric guitar introduction. Song Ji Eun played a part in composing and creating the lyrics for this piece. What sounds like triplets, really help set up the piece for the chorus. When the chorus hits, I am ever amazed again to her clarity and power that exists in her voice. She may not be an Ailee or Hyorin in terms of power, but she did more than a satisfactory job in my belief. Overall, a great upbeat piece!
SCORE: 9/10

ALBUM AVERAGE SCORE: 8.3/10

A solid score for Secret's Song Ji Eun's first mini album. Despite my lack of interest for the first song, I believe this album has three strong tracks. This underrated singer has once again impressed me with her clear vocals and my current favorite piece from her: Hope Torture.

The only gripe I have with this album is the album cover.

They could have used an image, say like a teaser pic

But they instead, decide to use this...

It's like they ran out of money to produce a nice cover for her after spending it on all those outfits for her music video.

Anyways, overall, great work from Song Ji Eun! For those who aren't too into Kpop, I think this album is a good start! For Song Ji Eun fans, it's a must listen!

I think I killed my stomach...

There goes my blogging streak. =(

I came home late last night, thus I was quite sleepy. I ended up going to bed right away! I'll make up for it with a quick review tomorrow and another blog post!

So onto the title...

Well for those who don't know, I'm slightly lactose intolerant. Occasionally, I can drink a glass of milk and not have any problems. However, after drinking a glass of milk, I had issues all day.

And it doesn't help eating greasy Asian BBQ chicken/pork/duck...

Besides that, I had a pretty ordinary day. Something came up, which I will discuss it in due time (near the end of the year!)

Tuesday, 1 October 2013

Uh oh...

It's only Tuesday, but I pretty much got no work done today!

I woke up an hour later than I usually would, and ended up watching YouTube videos and playing LoL all morning...

Not a good start to the week so far. =/ And a brand new month too boot too!

Well I shouldn't cry over spilt milk! I'll make tomorrow a more productive day! =)

Song Ji Eun - 희망고문 (False Hope/Torturous Hope/Hope Torture) MV Review

Besides BoA, Song Ji Eun of the Korean group, Secret, helped immerse me into the world of Kpop. In May last year, I happened to stumble across "It's Cold", an OST track for the drama Take Care of Us, Captain. I was amazed by the clarity Song Ji Eun had in terms of her vocal abilities. Due to that clarity, I dubbed her as the Mozart of the Kpop scene. True, I don't have a vast knowledge of all the singers in the business, but I have to argue that her voice is one of the clearest ones that I ever heard in a long time.

I just found out literally last week that Song Ji Eun was to release her first mini album, featuring three songs in which one of the songs had parts of it composed and lyrics written by Ji Eun herself. For the purpose of this review, I will focus on just her title track, which I'm not quite sure of the exact title so I'll stick with the term I first heard: Torturous Hope.

Once again, this is not a professional review. This review reflects my opinions and you're free to disagree with it in anyways that suit your needs. This time however, I'll try to integrate the music and the video into one to save on time it takes to write this blog post.

WARNING: I forgot to mention it on my blogpost yesterday, but this Music Video (MV) is rated 19+ due to some disturbing scenes. Viewer discretion is advised. For my own screen caps, I will not include pictures of these scenes, but I may make reference to it during the discussion of the music video.

Review and Thoughts
First of all, I have to say that the style of the MV from the teaser I saw didn't coincide with my expectations of Song Ji Eun or Secret. From my experiences, their MVs tend to be cutesy or sexy, but never overly complex to understand. From the teaser, I knew that this MV would be different for it looked dark and had images of minor body mutilation on Ji Eun's hand. Also, this video is filled with imagery that I cannot begin to hope to be able to interpret the intention of each scenes.

The slow-mid tempo R&B piece complements well with the mostly dark themed music video. The massive use of scene changes, from scenes of Ji Eun by herself, to those with, what I assume is her ex-boyfriend, really keeps the song going. At times, it made it difficult for me to keep track of where I am in terms of the song because I become so fixated to the intense images.

In a recent interview, Song Ji Eun stated: "It is said that guys tend to give false hope to girls after a breakup. So the title became False Hope. There are many guys who give false hope to girls even if they don't really like her. The lyrics talk about that kind of story." Message received. Despite not understanding a word of Korean, I could get that message from the video.

The constant usage of monotone and cool blue tones helped, I believe, bring out attention to the sadness that comes from a breakup. It's furthered supported by having Song Ji Eun and her ex having a long nail pierced into their hand; perhaps to illustrate a love turned to becoming a burden, especially to the girl. It is like Ji Eun has this "false hope" of being able to rekindle a 5relationship that have became unrequited. On the other hand, there were warmer scenes. I want to say that this represented more about the anger that comes from a break up (for we see her tear a cake apart when they used this filter [if that's the right word to use]), but I cannot say for sure. Perhaps it could be her own personal anger, for not being able to let go? However, the contrast between the sad and "angry" scenes convey the multiple emotions of the theme well.

There were two scenes that really caught my eye. The first one includes the monotone scenes with the red pomegranate. As simple as it is, it's purely ingenious in my opinion. The imagery of blood plays figuratively, and literally to an extent, to help strengthen the theme. Second, the scene where Ji Eun sits within a thorn bush. Well done in terms of conveying the feeling of despair and hopelessness of being trapped in this relationship. I believe it makes reference to the rose tattoo on the ex's arms.

Looking at this as a whole, I find the music video for Torturous Hope to be a wonderful contrast between the clarity of Song Ji Eun's voice and the complexity of the video. I feel that it is consistent with the mixed emotions that comes from a breakup that has one party with lingering feelings. And thus, this is the torture. To be a prisoner of one's own feelings. In conclusion, it's an amazing piece of art, and something really unexpected from Secret's main vocalist.

Screen caps
In the same interview, Song Ji Eun stated that she had to wear 12 different outfits for the shoot! I went through the music video and took screen caps of the 12 different outfits, or what I thought were the 12 different outfits.

I took them in order of appearance, so they may not all be the most pleasing shots of Song Ji Eun. And since I'm not really in tune with fashion, I have came up with my own names for the outfits. =P (I feel like those Asian restaurants with funny English names for their dishes)

 #1: Red stripped skirt

#2: White dress with black squares

 #3: Cardigan

 #4: Satin outfit

#5: Black and White Dress with skirt tail

 #6: Blue flower pattern

#7: Fluffy shoulder dress (My personal favorite in this MV. I really like her hair in this one)

 #8: Office attire

 #9: Simple White Outfit

 #10: Another black dress

 #11: Mademoiselle Outfit

#12: Similar to number 5, but pure black
